What is the six-character code on a plan, a rule, a question or an Activity entry?

It is a short code that names one plan, one rule, one question or one Activity entry, such as K7P2XY: six capital letters and digits, without 0, O, 1, I and L, which are easy to confuse.

Codes given before version 13.2.49.76 got two more characters: they had four, and an item whose code was K7P2 now has K7P2 followed by two more, such as K7P2XY. The old four-character code still works: it names the same item in messages, rules, plans and commits written before, Search finds the item with it, and your agent can resolve it, which also gives the code of today. A four-character code is never given again. Since version 13.2.49.74 they all share one code space across every project: a code names exactly one plan in Planning, one rule in Rules, one question in Conversations or one entry in Activity in the whole of SyncNow, and SyncNow's server gives it when the item is created and never changes it or gives it again, not even after the item or its project is deleted. Where data copied between projects had left the same code on two items, the older one kept it and the other was given a new code, while its old code still works in its own project. The usual ids, such as RDM-..., ENV-... and Q-12, stay as they are, and an item from before codes existed shows none until SyncNow gives it one.

The app shows the code, with its QR code, on the left of the row of a plan, a rule, a conversation and an Activity entry, in the panel of a plan next to its state, in the panel of a rule next to its section and at the top of an open conversation. Since version 13.2.49.77 a QR code of the code is shown, with the code itself in small letters under it (since 13.2.49.78 with no frame around them): a phone camera pointed at the screen reads it, for example to pass the code to a phone or to someone next to you, and a code of before version 13.2.49.76, with four characters, gets its own QR code too. An Activity row shows the entry's own code; its panel shows it again under who and when and, for an entry about a plan, a rule or a conversation, About plan, About rule or About conversation with the code of that item. A click on a code copies exactly the code, such as K7P2XY, and nothing else, in Planning, Rules, Conversations and Activity: the code under the QR code turns green when you point at it, a green check mark takes the place of the QR code for one and a half seconds once it is copied, while the code stays written under it, and there is no tooltip. The click does not open the item and does not close the panel already open on the right; an entry without a code, shown by the grey sign of its kind in Activity, opens the item like the rest of the row. Typing a code in Search the planning, Search the rules or Search conversations... finds that plan, rule or question, and in Search activity it finds the entry with that code and the entries about the item it names.

Agents see the code next to the id, for example Q-12 (K7P2XY): every SyncNow tool that takes a plan, a rule or a question accepts the code too, such as get_planning, get_environment and syndication_get, and project_activity gives every entry its code. If you paste K7P2XY, or an old code such as K7P2, to your agent, it can ask resolve_code what the code names, a plan, a rule, a question or an Activity entry, also in another project, but only in projects its team member is a member of; inside a work session it sees only that session's project. Anywhere else the code is not found, the same answer as a code never given. See How do I find an item in Planning?.
